Development
editing
The notion of a development editor comes from the world of fiction publishing. When a manuscript is drafted but not completed, an author can work with a development editor who will focus on the broad-level features of the manuscript from storytelling and character development, to story arch and plot holes.
In academic publishing and grant writing, development editing requires a strong research and editing background. A development editor can help in three key areas:
Quality
Control
Development editors focus on the non-scientific errors that undermine the success of a paper or proposal:
-
Poor rationale or responsiveness to the grant guidelines or agency mission statement
-
Scope of work that seems infeasible or out-of-sync with the grant mechanism
-
An investigative team that lacks the expertise necessary to complete the scope of work
Expanding
Ideas
Development editors can brainstorm with researchers to help them creatively extend the boundaries of their work in response to trends in funding priorities and funding opportunity announcements.

Research
In my research I focus on technology use and how that comes to bear on both mental and physical health. This theme emerges in several strands, each explored through a qualitative lens.
The first strand focuses on the health drivers and health outcomes of social media engagement.
The second strand is focused on the use of technology to promote cognitive health and social engagement among older adults.
Finally, the third strand looks at how the Internet can be used to alleviate stressors associated with cross-cultural adjustment in times of migration and acculturative stress.
